Description
Centered on the axis (C2), the model highlights the dens (odontoid process) projecting superiorly from the vertebral body and positioned to articulate with the anterior arch of the atlas (C1). Posterior to the dens, the vertebral foramen forms the spinal canal, while the paired superior articular facets sit posterolateral to the dens for articulation with C1. Laterally, the transverse processes frame the transverse foramina, and posteriorly the bifid spinous process of C2 contrasts with the more uniform posterior elements of C3 through C7. Orientation is clear. Attention to C2 is warranted because atlantoaxial rotation concentrates mechanical demand at the dens and its ligamentous restraints, chiefly the transverse ligament of the atlas, with the alar ligaments limiting excessive rotation. Dens fractures (type II at the base being the classic unstable pattern) and atlantoaxial instability in rheumatoid arthritis or Down syndrome are evaluated by scrutinizing this exact region, often with CT for bony detail and with flexion extension radiographs or MRI when ligament injury is a concern. Posterior C1 to C2 fixation and anterior odontoid screw concepts also start with a correct mental model of the dens, lateral masses, and the relationship of the transverse foramina to the vertebral artery. Small misreads here matter. Use this asset for cervical spine anatomy teaching in gross anatomy and radiographic anatomy modules, for illustrating odontoid fracture classification in trauma texts, or for patient education graphics explaining why C1 to C2 injuries can threaten the spinal cord despite a small fracture line.
