Description
Posterior anatomy of an adult male trunk and neck is rendered with the skin removed, centering the intrinsic (epaxial) musculature that lies adjacent to the vertebral column. Running longitudinally on either side of the spinous processes, the erector spinae mass (iliocostalis laterally, longissimus intermediate, spinalis medially) is presented in relation to the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae, with segmental attachments implied along the ribs and transverse processes. Superiorly, the deep posterior neck transitions toward the suboccipital region beneath the nuchal lines, while more superficial layers such as trapezius and latissimus dorsi are suggested as overlying reference planes. Bony landmarks anchor the relationships. Teaching the back is often about planes, not names. This posterior perspective supports discussion of the thoracolumbar fascia, the medial branch dorsal rami that innervate paravertebral muscles and facet joints, and why paraspinal compartment anatomy matters during posterior midline approaches to the spine.
