Description
Running along the medial distal thigh, the descending genicular artery arises from the femoral artery in the adductor canal and tracks inferiorly toward the medial aspect of the knee, where it contributes to the periarticular genicular anastomosis. Arterial channels are rendered in red and paired venous pathways in blue, with the femoral artery transitioning to the popliteal artery posterior to the knee and continuing into the anterior tibial, posterior tibial, and fibular (peroneal) arteries in the leg. Superficial venous drainage is suggested by the course of the great saphenous vein along the medial leg and the small saphenous vein posteriorly, contrasted against deeper companion veins. Depth cues and partial transparency clarify which vessels lie superficial versus deep. Understanding the descending genicular artery matters when you are planning medial knee approaches and when you are teaching the collateral circulation that maintains distal perfusion across the joint.
