Description
Anterior cranial anatomy is presented with the frontal bone highlighted, spanning the squamous part of the forehead superiorly and continuing inferiorly into the orbital plates that form the roof of each orbit. Along the inferior border, the supraorbital margins frame the superior orbital apertures, with the supraorbital notch or foramen expected near the junction of the medial and middle thirds. Medially, the frontal bone meets the nasal bones and the frontal process of the maxilla at the nasion and frontonasal region, while laterally it approaches the zygomatic process near the frontozygomatic suture. Teeth-bearing maxilla and the mandible sit inferior to the nasal aperture, and the upper cervical vertebrae appear at the skull base for orientation. Frontal bone surface landmarks matter in day-to-day clinical work. A blow to the forehead can produce anterior table frontal sinus fractures with cosmetic deformity, while posterior table involvement raises concern for CSF leak and intracranial injury, so knowing the likely sinus region deep to the glabella and superciliary arches helps when correlating examination findings and CT. The supraorbital rim is also a practical target for supraorbital nerve block to treat laceration pain or postoperative discomfort, and it is a fixed bony reference during bicoronal approaches and frontal craniotomy planning. Small landmarks, big consequences. Use this illustration when you need a clean anterior reference for skull osteology, including the borders of the frontal bone against adjacent facial bones and the relationship of the supraorbital margin to the orbits. It fits well in undergraduate anatomy and dental anatomy courses, neuroradiology teaching files that pair with axial and coronal CT of the frontal sinus, and operative atlases discussing frontal sinus trauma and anterior cranial fossa access.
