Description
Posterior full-torso anatomy is rendered with the integument made translucent, allowing the thoracic and abdominopelvic viscera to be seen in situ. Bilateral lungs occupy the superior thoracic cavity on either side of the vertebral column, with the heart positioned medial and slightly anterior to them, only partially appreciable from the rear view. Inferior to the diaphragm, the liver sits predominantly in the right upper abdomen, the stomach and spleen lie to the left, and the pancreas spans transversely in the upper abdomen; paired kidneys are shown retroperitoneal, posterior to the intestines and lateral to the midline. Clinical teaching benefits from this posterior perspective because it reinforces depth relationships that are easy to lose in anterior views, especially the retroperitoneal location of the kidneys and pancreas relative to the peritoneal cavity and the mesenteric loops of small intestine. For trauma and surgical anatomy, this orientation maps well to posterior access corridors, where flank and back approaches consider the kidneys’ position against the posterior abdominal wall and the pleural recesses that rise superior to the costal margin. Membranes matter here. The illustration’s emphasis on serosal coverings and compartment boundaries supports instruction on how inflammation can localize, for example peritonitis within the greater sac versus a retroperitoneal process such as acute pancreatitis tracking along fascial planes.
