Description
Anteriorly oriented, a frontal anatomical overlay presents the thoracic and abdominopelvic viscera of an adult Asian male in situ. Paired lungs occupy the right and left pleural cavities, flanking the centrally placed heart within the mediastinum, while the esophagus descends in the midline to join the stomach in the left upper quadrant. Inferior to the diaphragm, the liver dominates the right upper quadrant and drapes medially toward the epigastrium, with loops of small intestine filling the central abdomen and the large intestine framing them peripherally. Organ crowding is the point. The packed upper abdominal contents are easy to read in this composition. Spatial relationships in this view matter when teaching surface anatomy and interpreting cross sectional imaging, because learners often misjudge how far superior the liver and stomach sit under the costal margins in the living patient. Clinically, the illustration supports discussions of diaphragmatic excursion and its effect on organ position, the typical pattern of referred pain (for example, lower lobe pulmonary pathology irritating the diaphragm and presenting as upper abdominal discomfort), and why hepatomegaly or gastric distension can alter expected palpation findings.
