Description
Prominently rendered in an anterior view of the male thorax and proximal upper limb, the lateral cutaneous branch is traced as it pierces the deep fascia and divides into superficial terminal rami that fan laterally across the anterolateral body wall. Yellow nerve pathways course superficial to the pectoralis major and toward the lateral thoracic region, with the deltoid forming a superior, lateral muscular boundary at the shoulder. Medially, the sternum anchors the midline, while blue superficial veins accompany the cutaneous field in the subcutaneous plane. Orientation is clear. The sensory distribution expands laterally, away from the linea alba and toward the axillary line. Clinically, this is the nerve territory that becomes relevant when patients report numbness, dysesthesia, or burning pain over the lateral chest wall after thoracic procedures, breast surgery, or intercostal drain placement.
