Description
Seen from an anterior perspective, the lateral brachial cutaneous nerve is traced along the lateral aspect of the upper arm as it emerges in the distal arm near the cubital fossa, continuing superficially to supply the skin over the lateral brachium. Proximally, its relationship to the brachial plexus is suggested by nerve trunks coursing from the lower cervical region toward the axilla, with the clavicle and scapula framing the thoracic outlet and shoulder girdle. The humerus lies lateral to the rib cage, and the nerve tracks along its anterolateral contour toward the elbow joint. Bony landmarks are kept explicit. Clinically, this nerve represents the terminal sensory continuation of the musculocutaneous nerve after it pierces coracobrachialis and travels between biceps brachii and brachialis, a course that explains why lateral forearm and lateral arm sensory symptoms can follow proximal musculocutaneous injury. Entrapment or iatrogenic trauma near the antecubital region, including venipuncture-related neuropraxia or traction during elbow surgery, can produce numbness or dysesthesia over the lateral arm and radial side of the forearm, mimicking a superficial radial neuropathy unless you map the cutaneous territory carefully. Sensory-only changes. That pattern matters. Faculty can drop this graphic into gross anatomy labs when introducing brachial plexus branching and when differentiating axon-level peripheral nerve lesions from root-level plexopathy.
