Description
Running superficially along the anterolateral forearm, the lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve, the terminal sensory continuation of the musculocutaneous nerve, emerges near the lateral margin of the cubital fossa just lateral to the biceps brachii tendon. From this proximal point it descends distal to the elbow, tracking along the radial (thumb) side over the radius toward the wrist, with cutaneous branches spreading over the anterior and lateral antebrachium. Deep landmarks in this anterior perspective include the humerus proximally, the radius lateral to the ulna, and the carpal bones, metacarpals, and phalanges distally. Blue vascular elements are positioned superficial to the fascia in the expected territory of the cephalic vein, a frequent neighbor of this nerve. That anterolateral corridor matters because the lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve is a common source of postoperative dysesthesia and iatrogenic neurapraxia after venipuncture or cannulation of the cephalic vein and after elbow procedures that use an anterolateral approach. Distal biceps tendon repair, cubital fossa exposures, and even aggressive retraction around the bicipital aponeurosis can irritate it, producing burning pain or numbness over the radial forearm without intrinsic hand weakness. Sensory mapping here helps separate it from superficial radial nerve symptoms, which tend to concentrate dorsolaterally at the wrist and dorsum of the hand. A small nerve, a frequent complaint.
