Lingular Artery of the Left Lung

Description

Arising from the left pulmonary artery, the superior lobar artery courses into the upper lobe and gives off the lingular artery along the anteroinferior aspect of the left lung, just anterior to the hilum. From a posterior perspective, the lingular branch is followed as it passes inferiorly and anteriorly toward the lingula, running in close company with the lingular bronchi and their segmental subdivisions. Proximally, the pulmonary trunk and right and left pulmonary arteries remain near the midline, while the left lung sits lateral to the mediastinum with the bronchial tree and surrounding vascular meshwork visible in depth. Small arterioles radiate distally toward the peripheral capillary bed. This posterior view matters because the lingula often behaves clinically like a left-sided analogue of the right middle lobe, and its arterial supply can be a point of failure in procedures that isolate segmental perfusion.
