Description
Arising from the left pulmonary artery, the posterior basal segmental artery (A10) courses posteriorly and inferiorly toward the basal segments of the left lower lobe, running in close apposition to the segmental bronchus in the posterior basal bronchovascular bundle. A posterior perspective places the vessel deep to the visceral pleura and posterior to the left atrium and pulmonary veins, with the descending thoracic aorta lying medial and slightly posterior in the mediastinum. Distally, the segmental artery tapers into smaller intrapulmonary arterial branches and arterioles that track alongside bronchioles toward the peripheral acini. Orientation is clear. This view matters when you need to teach or plan segment-based work in the left lower lobe, because A10 is a frequent target in anatomic segmentectomy and a common source of troublesome bleeding if misidentified during fissure dissection or stapling of the inferior pulmonary ligament region. Posterior anatomy also helps clarify the relationship between pulmonary arterial branches and the inferior pulmonary vein, a point that becomes practical when interpreting CT pulmonary angiography or mapping vascular variants before video-assisted or robotic resections.
