Description
Arising from the right pulmonary artery, the lateral basal segmental artery (A9) courses inferolaterally into the lower lobe toward the lateral basal bronchopulmonary segment (S9). Its trajectory is shown in relation to the right lower lobar bronchus and the segmental bronchi, with the vessel running alongside its corresponding airway in the typical bronchovascular pairing. Proximally, the pulmonary trunk and right pulmonary artery sit anterior to the main bronchi, while pulmonary veins return toward the left atrium in a more anterior and inferior plane relative to the segmental arteries. Segmental pulmonary arterial anatomy matters when you are mapping perfusion to a specific bronchopulmonary segment, and the lateral basal territory is a frequent point of discussion in right lower lobe disease. Interventional radiologists rely on this branch-level detail during pulmonary angiography and catheter-directed therapy for pulmonary embolism, where segmental and subsegmental occlusions can preferentially affect basal segments and alter wedge-shaped perfusion patterns. Thoracic surgeons also reference A9 during segmentectomy planning in the right lower lobe, since safe parenchymal division depends on separating the A9 pedicle from adjacent basal branches (A8 anterior basal and A10 posterior basal) while respecting the intersegmental venous planes. Use this artwork in cardiopulmonary anatomy teaching when you need a clean link between the heart, pulmonary trunk, and distal segmental pulmonary arteries, or in surgical and radiology publications illustrating right lower lobe segmental vascular supply. It also fits clinical handouts on pulmonary embolism distribution and right lower lobe resection planning. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
