Description

Positioned on the right side of the thorax, the lateral segmental artery of the right lung is shown arising from the right pulmonary artery and coursing laterally toward the peripheral parenchyma of the upper lobe (A2) or middle lobe (A4) depending on the segmental convention used in your text. From an anterior perspective, the vessel runs posterior to the sternum and anterior to the vertebral column, passing in close company with the segmental bronchus while remaining more superior than the corresponding segmental pulmonary vein. Fine arteriolar branches radiate distally within the segment, tracking the bronchovascular bundle toward the visceral pleura. Small, bright-red branches dominate the lateral field. Segmental pulmonary arterial anatomy matters most when you need to think in surgical planes rather than lobes. During video-assisted thoracoscopic segmentectomy, safe division of a lateral segmental artery depends on recognizing its origin from the interlobar portion of the right pulmonary artery and its relationship to the segmental bronchus, because misidentification can sacrifice an adjacent segment and compromise margins. Interventional radiologists also rely on these branches when planning selective pulmonary angiography or addressing segmental pulmonary emboli that lodge distal to the lobar arteries but still produce wedge-shaped perfusion defects. Use this artwork in thoracic anatomy and cardiopulmonary blocks to teach bronchopulmonary segments, or in surgical atlases and operative consent materials focused on right-sided segmentectomy and pulmonary artery branching patterns in anterior view. It also fits radiology teaching files pairing CT pulmonary angiography with an anatomic map of segmental vessels. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
