Description
Arising from the right pulmonary artery, the lateral basal segmental artery (A9) courses anteriorly and laterally toward the inferior lobe of the right lung, tracking with the segmental bronchus to the lateral basal segment. Branch points narrow into arterioles as they approach the peripheral parenchyma, while the pulmonary veins lie more anterior and inferior in the hilum and run in a more intersegmental position toward the left atrium. Superiorly, the arterial pathway relates to the middle and lower lobe branching pattern, and inferiorly it approaches the diaphragmatic surface of the lung. Orientation stays in anterior view to keep the right hilar relationships readable. Segmental pulmonary arterial anatomy matters when you need to localize disease and spare lung tissue. A9 is routinely referenced during anatomical segmentectomy of the right lower lobe, where surgeons isolate segmental arteries and bronchi to remove a small peripheral tumor while preserving adjacent basal segments. It also becomes a practical landmark in CT angiography and bronchoscopy planning because pulmonary emboli, arteriovenous malformations, or inflammatory hyperemia often follow a segmental distribution that parallels the bronchovascular bundle. Small vessel, big consequence. Use this asset for thoracic anatomy teaching (segmental lung anatomy, hilar relations, bronchopulmonary segments), for cardiothoracic surgery and interventional radiology texts illustrating right lower-lobe segmentectomy or targeted embolization, and for radiology or pulmonary medicine materials that correlate anterior vascular projections with multiplanar CT. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
