Description
Seen from a posterior, slightly oblique perspective through semi-transparent dorsal soft tissues, the right and left lungs occupy the superior thoracic cavity on either side of the vertebral column. The trachea bifurcates at the carina into the right and left main bronchi, which branch into lobar and segmental bronchi that radiate laterally and inferiorly toward the peripheral lung parenchyma where the alveolar region is implied. On the left, the cardiac impression creates a medial indentation and a relatively smaller lung silhouette compared with the right. Inferiorly, the lungs taper toward the diaphragm, and the upper abdominal viscera (stomach and intestinal loops, with liver suggested on the right) sit beneath the thoracic cavity. A posterior view like this earns its place when you need to correlate surface anatomy of the back with internal respiratory structures and with the distribution of breath sounds. Clinically, it supports teaching why posterior auscultation and percussion over the lower lobes often detects pneumonia or dependent atelectasis, and why aspiration tends to involve the right lower lobe given the more vertical course of the right main bronchus. The left lung’s cardiac impression also helps anchor anatomic expectations during interpretation of chest radiographs and cross-sectional imaging, where apparent asymmetry can be normal.
