Seen in lateral profile beneath a semi-transparent facial integument, the orbicularis oculi encircles the palpebral fissure with its palpebral part in the eyelids and its thicker orbital part extending onto the surrounding orbital rim. Medially, fibers converge toward the medial palpebral ligament and lacrimal crest region, while laterally the muscle spreads across the lateral orbital margin and toward the temporal skin. Superior fibers lie immediately inferior to the eyebrow region, and inferior fibers sweep over the infraorbital area above the zygomatic bone. This is facial expression anatomy at close range. Surgeons and injectors care about the orbital portion because it generates forceful eyelid closure and drives lateral canthal rhytids, while the palpebral portion supports gentle blinking and tear film distribution. Misplaced botulinum toxin into the lower eyelid or pretarsal region can weaken lid apposition and contribute to exposure symptoms; conversely, targeted treatment of the lateral orbital fibers can soften crow’s feet without destabilizing the eyelid margin.
