Description
Running circumferentially around the palpebral fissure, the orbicularis oculi is presented in lateral profile with its orbital part sweeping over the lateral orbital rim and its palpebral part thinning across the superior and inferior eyelids. Anterior to the bony orbit, the muscle fibers converge medially toward the medial palpebral ligament and lacrimal region, while laterally they blend into the lateral palpebral raphe at the lateral canthus. Depth cues in a side view also clarify how the superficial orbicularis relates to the underlying tarsal plates and the orbital septum at the lid margin. Clinically, this angle clarifies why facial nerve dysfunction produces exposure keratopathy: loss of palpebral closure from orbicularis oculi weakness leaves the cornea uncovered, even when levator palpebrae superioris function remains intact.
