Seen in lateral profile, the orbicularis oculi forms a red circumferential sphincter around the orbital rim, draping over the lateral margin of the orbit adjacent to the zygomatic bone and frontal process of the zygomatic. Its palpebral portion lies superficial to the upper and lower eyelids, while the thicker orbital portion extends onto the lateral canthal region and onto the adjacent cheek and temple. Deep bony landmarks remain visible, including the frontal, zygomatic, maxillary, and temporal bones with cranial sutures, plus the mandible with maxillary and mandibular dentition. Portions of the upper cervical vertebrae, hyoid, and laryngeal framework appear posterior and inferior to the facial skeleton. Functionally, this lateral angle helps separate eyelid closure mechanics from deeper orbital anatomy: the palpebral fibers produce gentle blinking, while the orbital fibers drive forced closure and crow’s-feet rhytids at the lateral canthus. Clinically, it maps directly onto facial nerve (CN VII) motor territory, so you can relate weakness in Bell palsy to lagophthalmos and exposure keratopathy, or hyperactivity in benign essential blepharospasm treated with targeted botulinum toxin injections placed to avoid diffusion toward the levator palpebrae superioris.
