Pectoralis Minor Muscle

Description

Positioned on the anterior thoracic wall, the pectoralis minor lies deep to pectoralis major and runs superolaterally from the external surfaces of ribs 3 to 5 near their costal cartilages to the medial border and superior surface of the coracoid process of the scapula. The clavicle, manubrium and body of the sternum, and the adjacent costal cartilages frame the muscle’s origin, while the scapula sits posterolateral to the rib cage with the coracoid marking the proximal insertion. Serratus anterior occupies a more lateral plane on the ribs, and its digitations can be contrasted against the more compact pectoralis minor belly. Bony landmarks remain explicit. Rib contours and the sternocostal junctions matter. Clinically, this view is a workhorse for understanding scapular protraction and anterior tilt mechanics, because pectoralis minor tightness is a common driver of scapular dyskinesis and subacromial pain patterns. Its relationship to the axilla also matters: the cords of the brachial plexus and the axillary vessels sit deep and superior to its tendon near the coracoid, a frequent anatomic reference point when teaching thoracic outlet syndrome variants and planning pectoralis minor release. An anterior, rib-to-coracoid orientation makes those spatial relationships easy to teach without hand-waving. Use this asset in gross anatomy and kinesiology modules on the shoulder girdle, in physical therapy content addressing postural syndromes and scapular control, or in surgical education materials covering infraclavicular approaches and coracoid-based landmarks.
