Platysma-Auricular Ligament

Description

Lateral to the mandibular ramus and parotid region, the platysma is rendered as a thin, superficial sheet within the superficial cervical fascia, coursing superiorly toward the lower face. Superior and posterior to the angle of the mandible, a discrete platysma-auricular ligament is shown tethering the platysmal layer toward the auricular region overlying the temporal bone and external acoustic meatus. Deep to this superficial plane, the sternocleidomastoid runs obliquely from the mastoid process toward the sternum and clavicle, framing the posterolateral neck, while the cervical vertebrae form a posterior, segmented column beneath the soft tissues. Bony landmarks of the cranium and temporal region remain visible to orient the soft-tissue attachments. Attention to the platysma-auricular ligament matters because it clarifies how the platysma relates to the periauricular fascial system and why skin and superficial muscular tension can transmit toward the auricle during facial expression and cervical movement.
