Description
Centered in the thorax, the trachea descends inferiorly to the carina, then divides into the right and left main bronchi that branch into lobar and segmental bronchi within translucent lung fields. Closely applied to this airway tree, the pulmonary trunk exits the heart superiorly and bifurcates into the right and left pulmonary arteries, which course laterally at the lung hila and arborize distally into progressively smaller arterial branches that parallel the bronchial tubes. Right-sided branching extends toward the superior, middle, and inferior lobes, while the left-sided branches track into the superior and inferior lobes, reflecting lobar anatomy. Cardiac contours sit medial and inferior to the hilar regions. Clear relationships. Pulmonary arteries matter because they carry deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the alveolar capillary bed, and their anatomic pairing with bronchi is the scaffold clinicians use to localize perfusion defects.
