Description

Arising from the right ventricle, the pulmonary trunk ascends anterior to the left atrium and then divides early into the right and left pulmonary arteries, a bifurcation positioned just inferior to the aortic arch and anterior to the main bronchi. Within each lung, lobar and segmental pulmonary arterial branches track alongside the bronchial tree, maintaining a close bronchovascular pairing from the hilum into the periphery. The trachea descends in the midline superiorly before splitting into the main bronchi, which sit posterior to the corresponding pulmonary arteries at the root of the lung.
