Description
Arising from the right ventricle, the pulmonary trunk ascends anterior to the left atrium and then divides early into the right and left pulmonary arteries, a bifurcation positioned just inferior to the aortic arch and anterior to the main bronchi. Within each lung, lobar and segmental pulmonary arterial branches track alongside the bronchial tree, maintaining a close bronchovascular pairing from the hilum into the periphery. The trachea descends in the midline superiorly before splitting into the main bronchi, which sit posterior to the corresponding pulmonary arteries at the root of the lung. Heart and lungs are rendered with an x-ray style translucency to keep the vessel pathways legible through the parenchyma. Clear relationships. Early division of the main pulmonary artery matters in practice because it changes what you expect to see on CT pulmonary angiography and what you can safely isolate during hilar dissection. Acute pulmonary embolism typically lodges at the bifurcation (a saddle embolus) or in lobar branches, and this view makes the central branching pattern and downstream territories easy to teach. Congenital and acquired variants, including unilateral pulmonary artery hypoplasia or poststenotic dilation in pulmonary hypertension, also read best when the proximal trunk and first-order branches are emphasized relative to the bronchi and cardiac silhouette. Pulmonology and cardiothoracic surgery courses use this composition to orient learners to bronchopulmonary segments and to the artery-first versus bronchus-first logic of segmentectomy planning.
