Description
Running obliquely across the anterior thigh, the sartorius originates from the anterior superior iliac spine and courses inferomedially toward the proximal medial tibia at the pes anserinus. Along its path it lies superficial to the femoral triangle proximally, then crosses anterior to the adductor longus and gracilis while remaining lateral to the medial femoral condyle before it reaches its distal insertion. Adjacent fascia lata and superficial myofibers outline the straplike muscle belly as it narrows into tendon. Long and thin. Clinically, this oblique trajectory makes the sartorius a practical surface landmark for orienting the femoral neurovascular bundle, with the femoral artery and vein deep to its proximal course and the saphenous nerve traveling with the great saphenous vein along the medial knee where patients often report neuropathic pain after trauma or knee arthroscopy. At the pes anserinus, the sartorius tendon blends with gracilis and semitendinosus, a common pain generator in anserine bursitis and a familiar graft harvest site in ligament reconstruction. Its superficial position also explains why fascial release planes matter during anteromedial thigh approaches.
