Description
Obliquely from the lateral thoracic wall, the serratus anterior is highlighted along the anterolateral ribcage, its digitations forming a scalloped series of slips that arise from the outer surfaces of the upper ribs and intercostal fascia. Posterior to the muscle, the thoracic vertebral column and the posterior arcs of the ribs define the bony cage, while inferiorly the lower ribs taper toward the costal margin and upper abdomen. A portion of the pelvis anchors the inferior field, clarifying the trunk’s vertical alignment relative to the spine. Orientation reads cleanly as side-on anatomy. Serratus anterior matters because it couples ribcage fixation to scapular control, protracting the scapula and rotating it upward so the glenoid can follow the humeral head during arm elevation.
