Description
Posteriorly, the male thorax is rendered with the vertebral column centered, ribs curving laterally from the thoracic spine, and the scapulae lying on the posterolateral chest wall. Deep to the scapular body, the serratus anterior is highlighted along the lateral rib cage, its digitations arising from the outer surfaces of the upper ribs and sweeping posteriorly toward the medial border of the scapula. Superficially, the latissimus dorsi spans the lower thoracic and lumbar region on each side of the spinous processes, framing the deeper scapulothoracic musculature. Bony landmarks stay readable. For teaching scapular mechanics, a posterior view that keeps the ribs, scapula, and serratus anterior in the same field makes the scapulothoracic “sliding plane” easy to explain, including how the muscle’s rib-based origins translate force into protraction and upward rotation at the scapula. Clinically, this is the muscle implicated in medial scapular winging after long thoracic nerve injury, a pattern seen after axillary surgery, chest tube placement, or blunt traction to the shoulder girdle. The relationship to the ribs also supports discussions of how serratus anterior dysfunction alters scapular positioning and can aggravate subacromial impingement during overhead motion.
