Description
Running along the anterolateral neck, the sternothyroid muscle is shown deep to the platysma and superficial fascia, with its broad inferior attachment on the posterior aspect of the manubrium and first costal cartilage and its superior fibers ascending to the oblique line of the thyroid cartilage. A lateral perspective places the sternocleidomastoid muscle anterior to the carotid sheath region and the trapezius posteriorly, framing the more medial strap muscle layer over the larynx and proximal trachea. Superiorly, the infrahyoid plane relates to the hyoid region, while inferiorly it blends into the upper thoracic inlet where the sternum and clavicular contours define the root of the neck. Functionally, sternothyroid depresses the larynx after swallowing and during phonation, and its relationship to the thyroid cartilage makes it a practical landmark when teaching laryngeal elevation and the mechanics of the thyrohyoid membrane. This view also maps directly onto operative planes: during thyroidectomy or tracheostomy, surgeons split and retract the strap muscles in the midline, and an accurate mental model of sternothyroid fiber direction helps avoid unnecessary muscle trauma and postoperative strap muscle dyscoordination.
