Centered in the mediastinum, the heart sits inferior to the tracheal bifurcation, with the great vessels radiating from its base and the coronary arteries tracing the epicardial surface. From the pulmonary trunk, the left pulmonary artery courses horizontally toward the left hilum, where its superior lobar branches give rise to the superior lingular artery supplying the lingula of the left upper lobe. Fine arterial branches and accompanying pulmonary veins frame the perihilar region, with the venous channels returning toward the left atrium while systemic vessels (aorta and venae cavae) remain medial and posterior to the pulmonary outflow.
