Description
Beneath the superficial cervical fascia, the thyrohyoideus spans from the oblique line of the thyroid cartilage to the inferior border of the hyoid bone, sitting deep to the sternohyoid and close to the anterior laryngeal framework. Superiorly, the body of the hyoid and adjacent suprahyoid attachments lie just inferior to the mandible and dentition, while posteriorly the cervical vertebrae and intervertebral discs provide a clear bony reference in lateral profile. Laterally, the sternocleidomastoid runs from the mastoid process toward the manubrium and clavicle, helping orient the carotid region even when the vascular structures are not the focus. Cartilage dominates the midline. Understanding the thyrohyoideus matters because it is the only infrahyoid muscle that can elevate the larynx when the hyoid is fixed, a key step in the pharyngeal phase of swallowing and a common teaching point in dysphagia assessment. In anterior neck surgery, the plane between strap muscles and the thyroid cartilage is a working corridor for tracheostomy, laryngotracheal exposure, and thyroidectomy, so appreciating how the thyrohyoideus hugs the superior border of the thyroid cartilage helps prevent disorientation near the thyrohyoid membrane and superior laryngeal neurovascular bundle.
