Description
Arising at the renal pelvis, the ureter begins as a tapered continuation of the collecting system, with the major and minor calyces branching superiorly and laterally around the papillary tips of the renal pyramids. From this funnel-shaped pelvis, the muscular ureter descends inferiorly as a narrow tube, leaving the kidney at the hilum and heading toward the pelvis in a straightened, proximal segment. Calyceal necks converge medially into the pelvis. The lumen narrows into the ureteropelvic junction. That proximal anatomy matters because the ureter is not just a conduit, it is a peristaltic muscular tube with predictable physiologic narrowings where calculi lodge, starting at the ureteropelvic junction shown here. Hydronephrosis begins upstream: calyceal dilation and blunting of fornices precede cortical thinning when obstruction persists, and this model makes those relationships easy to teach. Surgeons and proceduralists also use the renal pelvis as a landmark during ureteroscopy and stent placement, where recognizing the infundibula and calyces helps avoid inadvertent entry into a calyx and guides access to an obstructing stone. Useful for renal and urinary tract modules in gross anatomy, urology teaching files, and textbook figures explaining urine flow from minor calyx to renal pelvis and into the ureter in the adult male. It also fits patient-facing diagrams for nephrolithiasis counseling and for radiology correlation with CT urography or retrograde pyelography, where these same branching contours define the collecting system.
