Description
Presented in longitudinal section, the male kidney is opened to expose the renal cortex peripherally and the renal medulla centrally, with medullary pyramids tapering into papillae that project into minor calyces. Urine outflow converges from the collecting ducts toward the major calyces and the funnel-shaped renal pelvis, which narrows inferiorly to become the proximal ureter. Red arterial branches course from the renal sinus into the parenchyma as segmental, interlobar, arcuate, and interlobular arteries, while blue venous channels return blood along a parallel route. Clinically, the renal pelvis to ureter junction is a common site of obstruction, whether from a congenital ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) stenosis or an impacted calculus that produces hydronephrosis of the collecting system. That anatomy also frames endourologic planning: access for ureteroscopy and stent placement depends on understanding the transition from pelvis to ureter and the orientation of the calyceal system, while preservation of segmental arterial supply matters during partial nephrectomy because arterial territories in the cortex do not freely collateralize. A tight junction, big consequences.
