Description
Sectioned male kidney anatomy is presented with the renal cortex forming the outer rim and the renal medulla arranged as renal pyramids projecting toward the renal sinus. Minor calyces cup the renal papillae and converge into major calyces, which unite as the renal pelvis in the central, funnel-shaped collecting space. Inferiorly, the pelvis narrows at the ureteropelvic junction to become the ureter, a tubular continuation exiting the kidney at the hilum and descending distally toward the urinary bladder. Spatial relationships are clear: cortex peripheral, pyramids deep, calyceal system central, ureter most inferior and medial at the exit. This cross-section is the teaching view for understanding how urine moves from papillary ducts to minor calyx, then major calyx, renal pelvis, and into the ureter. It also aligns directly with common obstruction sites, most often a calculus lodged at the ureteropelvic junction, producing hydronephrosis with progressive dilation of the renal pelvis and calyces and compression of the medulla. Surgeons and radiologists use these landmarks when interpreting CT urography or planning endoscopic and percutaneous approaches, where differentiating calyceal anatomy from the pelvis affects access route and risk to surrounding parenchyma.
