Description
Posterior anatomy of an obese adult white male is rendered with a semi-transparent integument to localize the retroperitoneal urinary tract. Each kidney sits lateral to the vertebral column, with the renal hilum facing anteromedially where the renal artery and renal vein converge into the renal sinus and continue as the ureter. The ureters descend inferiorly along the posterior abdominal wall toward the pelvis, terminating in the urinary bladder, which lies midline and anterior within the pelvic cavity, partly overlapped by intestinal loops in the lower abdomen. Portions of the lungs are visible superiorly, providing thoracoabdominal orientation. Posterior views like this clarify the retroperitoneal position of the kidneys and ureters, a point that gets lost in anterior-only diagrams and becomes clinically relevant during flank pain workups and retroperitoneal surgery. The depiction of the renal vessels at the hilum supports teaching of vascular relationships that matter in partial nephrectomy, renal transplantation planning, and in understanding why renal artery stenosis can present with secondary hypertension. Body habitus matters too: increased perirenal fat and abdominal adiposity can obscure landmarks on physical exam and alter the working distance and trocar angles in laparoscopic or robotic urologic procedures. A good roadmap.
