Description

Centered within the female pelvis, the uterus (womb, hyster, metra) is shown with its fundus and body superior to the cervix, positioned between the urinary bladder anteriorly and the rectum posteriorly. Broad ligament reflections extend laterally toward the pelvic sidewalls, where the uterine tubes course toward the ovaries and the uterine horn region. Superiorly, loops of small intestine and the transverse and descending colon occupy the abdominal cavity, while the pelvic floor musculature lies inferior to the reproductive tract and blends laterally with the proximal thigh muscle compartments. Red and blue vessels trace the pelvic circulation, making this view well suited to teaching the uterine artery’s relationship to the cervix and upper vagina and its crossing with the ureter in the parametrial region (the classic water under the bridge landmark). That relationship drives the operative anatomy of hysterectomy and uterine-sparing procedures, where ureteral injury and uterine artery hemorrhage are concrete risks. Yellow neural pathways add context for autonomic supply from the inferior hypogastric plexus, a practical reference when discussing postoperative bladder dysfunction and pelvic pain patterns. Use this artwork for gross anatomy labs covering female pelvic viscera, for OB-GYN teaching files on pelvic surgical anatomy, and for medical publishing figures that need uterus-centered context within the broader abdominal and pelvic visceral, vascular, and neural networks. It also fits patient-education materials explaining where the uterus sits relative to bowel, bladder, and pelvic floor support. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
