Description
Obliquely transected through the uterine body, this three-quarters profile brings the external contour of the womb into relation with the cut surface of its wall. The myometrium forms the thick middle layer, bounded externally by perimetrium and internally by endometrium lining the uterine cavity, with endometrial glands extending from the surface epithelium down toward the myometrial junction. Superiorly, the fundal dome curves above the cavity, while the lateral uterine margins broaden toward the cornual regions where the uterine tubes would communicate, even if the adnexa are not included in the section. That wall thickness matters. Hypertrophy of the myometrium in pregnancy, diffuse or focal thickening with adenomyosis, and distortion from leiomyomas all change the relationship between gland-bearing endometrium and the surrounding smooth muscle, and a section like this makes those layers easy to teach. For gynecologic surgery, the same plane helps clarify why bleeding control in myomectomy or hysterectomy depends on the arcuate and radial vessels coursing within the myometrium, near the endometrial cavity.
