Description
Anterior pelvic surface anatomy is centered on the uterus (womb, metra, hystera), with the broad, muscular uterine body expanding superiorly into the dome-shaped fundus and tapering inferiorly into the cervix. From the external contour, you would expect the fundus to sit superior to the uterine body, while the cervical region lies inferior and more midline as it approaches the vaginal canal. The lateral margins of the uterine body typically suggest the uterine cornua, where the uterine tubes begin, and the overall profile reflects the organ’s anteverted, anteflexed resting position relative to the urinary bladder and rectum. Surface topography emphasizes form, not mucosa. This external view matters when you need to translate internal gynecologic anatomy to palpable or sonographic landmarks. Fundal height assessment in early pregnancy, postpartum uterine involution, and the enlarged, irregular contour of leiomyomas all rely on recognizing how the uterine fundus and body project within the pelvis and lower abdomen.
