Description
Over the dorsum and plantar aspect of the adult male foot, blue venous channels course superficial and deep to the tarsal and metatarsal bones, with fine venules converging from the phalanges toward larger collecting trunks. Distally, digital veins drain the toes and coalesce into dorsal metatarsal veins, feeding the dorsal venous arch that spans transversely across the metatarsal bases. Medially, tributaries track toward the great saphenous vein anterior to the medial malleolus, while lateral pathways align with the small saphenous vein posterior to the lateral malleolus, their trajectories readable against the semi-transparent osseous framework. Deep venous companions run in the plantar foot alongside the arterial tree, gathering outflow from the plantar venous arch toward the posterior tibial and fibular veins in the distal leg. Clinical relevance is immediate because the superficial venous network on the dorsum of the foot is a common access site for peripheral venous cannulation, yet it is also a frequent location for superficial thrombophlebitis and painful varicosities. Mapping the relationship of the dorsal venous arch to the extensor tendons and metatarsals clarifies why edema, trauma, or tight footwear can distort vein caliber and make access unreliable.
