Arising from the digital venules and dorsal digital veins, the dorsal venous arch spans the dorsum of the foot just proximal to the metatarsophalangeal joints, then channels blood medially into the great saphenous vein and laterally into the small saphenous vein. Superficial veins course over the metatarsals and tarsals while deeper channels accompany the anterior tibial vessels at the ankle, passing between the malleoli toward the anterior compartment of the leg.
