Description
Arising along the dorsal aspects of the toes, the dorsal digital veins converge proximally into the dorsal metatarsal veins and the dorsal venous network across the dorsum of the foot. From a lateral perspective, the venous channels course superficial to the metatarsals and phalanges, then sweep posteriorly toward the lateral malleolus, where they feed the lateral marginal vein and continue as the small saphenous vein along the posterolateral calf. Bony landmarks including the calcaneus, talus, cuboid, and the distal tibia and fibula anchor the trajectory of these superficial vessels in relation to the ankle mortise. Arteries are contrasted in red, tracking deeper pathways toward the dorsalis pedis distribution. Lateral views of the dorsal digital veins matter when you need to teach or plan access to superficial venous drainage at the level of the foot and ankle, where vessel caliber and variability can complicate cannulation or phlebotomy. The transition from the lateral marginal vein to the small saphenous vein is also a practical landmark in venous duplex mapping for varicosities and for understanding reflux patterns that track up the posterolateral leg rather than the medial long saphenous territory. Keep the sural nerve in mind, it frequently runs adjacent to the small saphenous vein behind the lateral malleolus and is a known structure at risk during vein procedures. Use this plate in lower limb anatomy teaching (gross anatomy, podiatry, physiotherapy), in vascular surgery or interventional radiology materials discussing superficial venous pathways, and in patient-facing diagrams explaining varicose vein distribution around the lateral ankle and calf.
