Description
Arising from the zygomatic bone just lateral to the orbital margin, the zygomaticus minor runs anteroinferiorly as a narrow band of muscle fascicles toward the upper lip, where its tendon blends with the orbicularis oris and adjacent levator labii superioris. In profile, it sits medial and slightly superior to the thicker zygomaticus major, crossing superficial to the maxilla and tracking toward the nasolabial region. The orbit, zygomatic arch, and maxillary dentition provide fixed bony landmarks for its line of pull. Cervical vertebrae appear inferior to the occiput, orienting the craniofacial complex in anatomical position. Facial expression hinges on small vectors. Zygomaticus minor elevates the upper lip and deepens the nasolabial fold, so its relationship to the infraorbital rim and the course of the infraorbital nerve is not academic when planning filler injection, midface lift dissection, or reconstruction after zygomaticomaxillary complex fracture. Confusion between zygomaticus minor and the nearby levator labii superioris is common in teaching, and a strict lateral profile helps separate their origins and trajectories.
