Seen from an anterior perspective on a male torso with the skin removed, the paired external oblique muscles form the superficial layer of the anterolateral abdominal wall, their inferomedially directed fibers arising from the external surfaces of ribs 5 to 12. Medially, the muscular bellies transition into a broad aponeurosis that courses toward the midline to contribute to the linea alba, while inferiorly the fibers converge toward the iliac crest and the inguinal region. The rib cage, sternum, and clavicles provide the superior framework, and the superior pelvis anchors the caudal attachments, clarifying the muscle’s span from thorax to hip. Because the external oblique aponeurosis becomes the anterior rectus sheath above the arcuate line and helps form the inguinal ligament and superficial inguinal ring, this view is a practical map for teaching and operating. Surgeons rely on these fiber directions and aponeurotic planes when planning a McBurney or gridiron-type split for appendectomy, raising flaps in abdominoplasty, or navigating anterior approaches for ventral and inguinal hernia repair. Fiber orientation matters. It predicts the lines of pull, the direction a split will open, and the plane where intercostal nerves travel between the internal oblique and transversus abdominis.
