Description
Across the anterolateral abdominal wall, the paired external oblique muscles form a broad, superficial sheet beneath the skin, extending inferiorly from the lateral ribs toward the iliac crest and pubic region. Their fibers run inferomedially (hands-in-pockets orientation), converging into a wide external oblique aponeurosis that approaches the midline to contribute to the anterior layer of the rectus sheath and linea alba. Superiorly, the lower costal margin and rib cage sit deep to the muscle’s digitations; laterally, the flank contour is defined by the external oblique as it transitions toward the midaxillary line. Deltoid and proximal arm landmarks provide shoulder girdle context without competing for attention. For teaching surface and layered anatomy of the male trunk, an anterior view beneath the skin puts the external oblique in the right plane, superficial to internal oblique and transversus abdominis, and continuous with the inguinal ligament as the aponeurosis thickens between the anterior superior iliac spine and pubic tubercle. That relationship matters in hernia work, because the superficial inguinal ring is an opening in the external oblique aponeurosis and becomes a key landmark when explaining indirect versus direct inguinal hernias, mesh placement, and postoperative pain related to ilioinguinal nerve irritation.
