Description
Superficial on the anterolateral abdominal wall, the external oblique muscle forms a broad sheet with inferomedial fiber direction from the lower ribs toward the linea alba and pubic region. Medially, its fleshy fibers transition into the external oblique aponeurosis, which crosses toward the midline to contribute to the anterior rectus sheath and the linea alba. Inferiorly, the aponeurotic thickening forms the inguinal ligament running from the anterior superior iliac spine to the pubic tubercle, with the superficial inguinal ring positioned just superolateral to the pubic crest. Skin is removed, but the surface anatomy remains clear. Because the external oblique aponeurosis is the anterior wall of the inguinal canal, this anterior view maps directly onto the exam and operative landmarks used in suspected inguinal hernia, including the relationship of the superficial ring to the pubic tubercle and inguinal ligament. It also supports teaching of abdominal wall incisions and flap planes, where staying superficial to the external oblique aponeurosis differs from splitting the aponeurosis to enter the inguinal canal. A practical landmark.
