Short dorsal tarsal ligaments span these superior joint lines, including dorsal talonavicular, dorsal calcaneocuboid, dorsal cuneonavicular, dorsal intercuneiform, and dorsal tarsometatarsal bands, knitting together the bones from medial to lateral. Distally, the metatarsals lead to the phalanges, with dorsal capsules outlining the metatarsophalangeal and interphalangeal articulations. Dorsal joint cartilage is indicated at the contact surfaces. Functionally, these dorsal ligaments are modest in bulk compared with the plantar ligament complex, but they help constrain dorsal gapping during midfoot loading and define the dorsal boundary encountered in approaches to the talonavicular and tarsometatarsal joints.
