Shown from a dorsal (superior) perspective, the right foot skeleton is rendered with the dorsal tarsal ligament complex spanning the talus, calcaneus, navicular, cuboid, and the three cuneiforms before continuing distally to the bases of the metatarsals. Short, band-like dorsal intertarsal and dorsal tarsometatarsal ligaments cross the joint lines, running mainly in an anteroposterior direction with some oblique fibers, binding adjacent tarsal elements from medial to lateral. Articular cartilage caps the tarsal and metatarsal surfaces, clarifying the separations at the talonavicular, calcaneocuboid, intercuneiform, and tarsometatarsal joints. Small but busy anatomy. Dorsal tarsal ligaments get less attention than the plantar ligaments and plantar aponeurosis, yet they become clinically relevant whenever the midfoot is injured under axial load and twist, where dorsal ligament failure often accompanies Lisfranc (tarsometatarsal) disruption.
