Seen from a superior (dorsal) perspective, the dorsal talonavicular ligament spans as a broad, thin band from the dorsal aspect of the talar neck to the dorsal surface of the navicular, crossing the talonavicular joint line just distal to the talar head. The ligament lies anterior to the talar trochlea and superior to the spring ligament complex (plantar calcaneonavicular ligament), with the calcaneus positioned posterolateral and the cuboid and cuneiforms continuing distally into the midfoot. Adjacent dorsal capsular fibers and short dorsal intertarsal ligaments blend with the periosteum over the talus and navicular. Clear orientation landmarks. This dorsal sheet matters because it reinforces the talonavicular capsule against dorsal gapping during midfoot motion, a joint that functionally couples hindfoot inversion and eversion with forefoot adaptation through the transverse tarsal complex. In midfoot sprains and talonavicular subluxation, tenderness localizes over the dorsal talar head and navicular, and ligament attenuation can accompany acquired flatfoot when plantar stabilizers fail and the talar head drifts plantar and medial.
