Collateral ligaments span the medial and lateral aspects of each toe joint, running obliquely from the dorsal-lateral margin of one phalanx to the dorsomedial margin of the adjacent phalanx, blending with the fibrous joint capsule at their attachments. Proximally, the collateral complexes at the MTP joints sit adjacent to the dorsal extensor apparatus (extensor digitorum longus and brevis tendons), while distally they tighten toward the smaller DIP articulations.
