Description
Plantar anatomy of the male forefoot is rendered with the phalanges and metatarsals aligned in anatomical position, the proximal, middle, and distal phalanges arranged distal to the metatarsal heads and separated by the metatarsophalangeal and interphalangeal joint lines. Near the bases of the toes, the cruciform ligaments appear as intersecting bands that cross obliquely across the plantar aspect of the digital joints, lying superficial to the joint capsules and contiguous with the fibrous flexor sheaths. White ligamentous cords span between adjacent bony margins, while blue tendons track longitudinally toward the distal phalanges, consistent with the flexor tendons coursing plantar to the metatarsals and digits. This plantar perspective matters because it clarifies how the digital fibrous sheath system constrains the flexor tendons and resists bowstringing during toe flexion, and where crossing fibers reinforce the plantar capsule around the metatarsophalangeal region.
