Description
Plantar soft tissues have been removed to expose the plantar calcaneocuboid ligament (ligamentum calcaneocuboideum plantare) spanning the lateral column of the foot. Its short, deep, broad fibers course from the anterior process and plantar surface of the calcaneus to the plantar aspect of the cuboid, lying inferior to the calcaneocuboid joint line and lateral to the more medial long plantar ligament. Surrounding bony landmarks include the calcaneus posteriorly, the cuboid distally, and the bases of the fourth and fifth metatarsals continuing anteriorly; the tarsal architecture frames the midfoot in an oblique plantar perspective. A blue highlight isolates the band for quick identification. Because the plantar calcaneocuboid ligament stabilizes the calcaneocuboid articulation, this view is useful when teaching how the lateral longitudinal arch resists torsion during gait. It is a frequent point of confusion with the long plantar ligament in dissection and in operative reports, yet the distinction matters when evaluating midfoot sprain patterns after inversion injuries and when planning procedures that involve the lateral column, including calcaneocuboid arthrodesis or midfoot reconstructions.
