Presented in anatomical position, a female figure is divided sagittally, with the left half in natural skin tone and the right half color coded to outline ventral cutaneous nerve territories (dermatomes) from the face and neck down the trunk and limbs. On the mapped side, segmental bands traverse the thorax and abdomen in a transverse pattern consistent with intercostal and subcostal nerve distribution, while the upper limb fields wrap from lateral shoulder and arm to the forearm and palmar hand. Inferiorly, the lower limb regions track from the anterior thigh across the knee to the medial leg and dorsum of the foot, with more lateral territories extending toward the hip and lateral malleolar region. Dermatomal anatomy is the reference frame for localizing radiculopathy and distinguishing it from peripheral nerve entrapment, and an anterior diagram makes the distinctions in limb pain patterns easier to teach. Think herpes zoster on the trunk following a single thoracic spinal nerve, or an L5 radicular pain pattern radiating toward the dorsum of the foot compared with femoral neuropathy affecting the anterior thigh and medial leg via the saphenous nerve. Clinical mapping is never perfectly sharp, so the clean boundaries here work as a starting point for discussing overlap and individual variation.
