Description
Sectioned renal parenchyma is presented in an anterior-oriented cut that opens the renal sinus and follows the renal artery as it enters at the hilum and divides into primary segmental arteries. Red cortical tissue forms the outer renal cortex, while darker medullary pyramids project toward the papillae, separated by renal columns that carry interlobar vessels toward the corticomedullary junction. Blue venous channels accompany the arterial tree, converging toward the renal vein, and the pale renal pelvis sits medial to the pyramids as the proximal ureter descends inferiorly. Segmental arterial anatomy matters because these are end arteries with limited collateralization, so an iatrogenic injury or ligation can infarct a discrete renal segment. Partial nephrectomy and donor nephrectomy planning often hinges on recognizing early branching patterns at the hilum and the relationship of the renal artery to the renal pelvis and venous tributaries. Short renal arteries, accessory renal arteries, or a polar branch arising proximally are common variants and can complicate hilar clamping and ureteropelvic junction exposure. Clean landmarks.
